Inks Lake

In the Highland Lakes of Central Texas

Inks Lake, Texas, weather forecast

Inks Lake, a beautiful and popular destination, was formed in 1938 by the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA) with the completion of the Inks Dam. Located about 55 miles northwest of Austin, Texas, on Highway 29, it's the next lake downstream from Lake Buchanan and begins just below the Buchanan Dam. At 4.2 miles long and 3,000 feet wide, it's the shortest of the first four lakes on the Colorado River, but many consider it one of the prettiest.

Inks Lake is a fantastic spot for boating and water skiing. The views of the striking bridge and the dam are particularly appealing. The lake is also well-known for its fishing, having been stocked with largemouth bass, white bass, catfish, crappie, and sunfish. A new four-lane bridge has replaced the old one, but the old bridge has been preserved as a walking bridge. While diving and fishing are not permitted from the old bridge, it offers great views of the lake, Buchanan Dam, and boating activity—perfect for a peaceful stroll on a gentle evening.

Inks Lake State Park is a 1,200-acre expanse of cedar and oak woodlands bordering the lake. The park is a hub for outdoor activities, including swimming, boating, fishing, hiking, and barbecuing. With 7.5 miles of hiking trails, it's a great place to spot wildlife like deer and turkeys. You can rent canoes, kayaks, and paddleboats, or join one of the park's guided tours. Inks Lake State Park is located nine miles west of Burnet on Texas 29. For more information, you can call (512) 793-2223.

For golf enthusiasts, the Highland Lakes Public Golf Club is a nine-hole public course situated on Inks Lake. Located on Park Road 4 just south of Highway 29, it's about a 15-minute drive from Burnet and 20 minutes from Marble Falls, Texas.
