Lady Bird Lake
In the Highland Lakes of Central Texas
Lady Bird Lake in Austin, Texas, is a serene, constant-level reservoir on the Colorado River. Originally named Town Lake, it was renamed in honor of Claudia Alta Taylor "Lady Bird" Johnson, the former First Lady of the United States. A lifelong advocate for beautifying cities and highways, Lady Bird Johnson was a key figure behind the Highway Beautification Act.
The lake spans six miles, with a width ranging from 400 to 2,500 feet, and has an average depth of 14 feet. It is located downstream from Lake Austin and flows through downtown Austin, with I-35 crossing over it.
Because of its placid waters, Lady Bird Lake is a popular spot for recreational activities like canoeing and kayaking. To preserve the peaceful environment, the lake does not permit swimming, motorized boats, or jet skis.
