Lake Buchanan

Highland Lakes Second Largest Body of Water

Buchanan Dam, Texas, weather forecast

Nestled in the heart of the Texas Hill Country, Lake Buchanan is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. Boaters, campers, anglers, and swimmers flock to its shores, drawn by the serene beauty and endless recreational opportunities. One of the lake's greatest advantages is its immense size—at nearly five miles wide and 30 miles long, it offers a feeling of uncrowded seclusion even on the busiest days.

What sets Lake Buchanan apart from its neighboring Highland Lakes is its stunning granite gravel shores. These unique "beaches" provide the perfect place to swim, wade, and soak up the sun, creating a truly unique lakeside experience.

As you drive along Highway 29 at the lake's southern end, a privately owned lighthouse stands as a charming landmark near the Buchanan Dam.

History and Facts

A true Texas giant, Lake Buchanan is the second-largest of the Highland Lakes, boasting a staggering 124 miles of shoreline.

The lake's creation is a feat of engineering: the two-mile-long Buchanan Dam, completed in 1938, was once the longest multiple-arch dam in the United States. Named in honor of U.S. Representative J.P. Buchanan, both the lake and the dam stand as enduring landmarks.

Lake Buchanan's central location makes it an easy escape for many Texans. It is just 60 miles northwest of Austin, 95 miles north of San Antonio, and roughly 200 miles from both Dallas/Fort Worth and Houston.
